What is networking?
Here are two definitions of computer networking. Whatever you find simple, you can use it for yourself.
Definition of networking
“Computer networking is a subject that describes how computers are interconnected to share resources and information, and what technologies and tools are used for connectivity.”
“Networking, also known as computer networking, is the technique of creating a network between nodes (such as a computer) on a shared medium in an information system and transporting and exchanging data.”
Networking includes all that is required for a network such as the design, construction, and use of networks. It also includes management, maintenance, and operation of network infrastructure, software, and policies.
Types of Networking
There are two primary types of computer networking: wired networking and wireless networking.
- Wired networking
- Wireless networking.
Wired networking: Wired networking requires the use of a physical medium to transport or transfer data between nodes (Computer). Wires are used for this.
Copper-based Ethernet cabling is commonly used for digital communication in businesses and homes. Alternatively, optical fiber is used to transport data at greater distances and faster speeds.
Wireless networking: In wireless networking, radio waves are used to transport or send and receive data over the air, allowing devices to be connected to the network without cables.
Wireless LAN is the most famous example of wireless networking. Other options include microwave, satellite, cellular, WiFi, and Bluetooth.
As a general rule, wired networking provides greater speed, reliability, and security than wireless networks; Wireless networking provides greater flexibility, mobility and scalability.
Purpose of Computer Networking
The main purpose of computer networking is to build networks and share data. This allows us to share mainly three things; Data, resources, and applications.
Advantage of networking
Computer networking provides the following benefits.
- Allows sharing of data and resources.
- Helps reduce the number of devices required.
- Gives a platform to communicate with other users in the network.
- Multiple users can work on the same project.
- Allows data to be stored in a centralized location.
- Allows security policies to be implemented.
- Allows to track and monitor resource usage.
